Pelee Island,
Ontario

Pelee Island is the most southerly place in Canada and is a major thruway for migratory for birds. Margaret and her late partner Graeme Gibson were active birders and often travelled to their home here. They founded The Pelee Island Bird Observatory, an NGO devoted to the study and conservation of birds and their habitats. This valuable data helps to better understand the changes and challenges facing populations of migrating birds.

I loved the birding trips, but I didn’t love them because of the birds because, you know, for a small child you could like traipse along in the woods and there are a lot of mosquitoes and then suddenly all the adults go, shhh! It’s over there.
